The tv segment covers TVs and console devices with internet access, using the remote control or game pad for navigation and interaction. Like Playstation 3, Nintendo Wii and SMART-TVs. Featurewise this is a very broad segment as the browsers in these devices range from very old NetFront mobile browsers to state of the art WebKit browsers.
As of December 2017 this segment is hardly represented in the statistics. This is not due to a lack of market penetration but rather the result of regular websites being absolutely useless when accessed on these devices. It just doesn't work. You can make it better.
Browser requirements:
The tv segment is defined by the following criteria:
- Large displays with less pixel density then regular computers
- Primary input method is remote control or game pad
- Browser supports the tv segment requirements
The tv segment supports the following features:
- DOM manupulations
- Timerbased animations
- CSS2 support
Supporting these devices typically requires a unique UI optimized for the very limited input options. Also the user is typically further away from the screen. Think in very big buttons and large text-sizes. It should include some support for the color coded function keys typically available on game pads and remote controls.
If you're working with these devices, please get in touch – we would love to develop a more strict browser specification for this segment.
